If you are planning a getaway to the Quintana Roo coast, you are likely torn between the high-energy skyline of Cancun and the jungle-chic aesthetic of Tulum. While they are only about 80 miles apart, they offer two completely different worlds.

My first trip to Tulum was back in 2017. I first went to Cancun in 2016 and I definitely prefer Tulum over Cancun. Don't get me wrong though, I love Cancun, too, I just love Tulum more. It's quieter, more affordable and not as touristy as Cancun.

However, in recent years, it has become more popular and it does see its fair share of tourists. It even has its own airport now, making getting there even easier!

Here is everything you need to know to decide where to book your next flight.

1. Ease of Access & Travel

  • Cancun: The Easy Winner. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is a global hub. Most travelers can reach the "Hotel Zone" in 30 minutes.

  • Tulum: Getting Easier. As of 2026, you have two great options. You can fly directly into the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) in Tulum, or take the Tren Maya (Maya Train) from Cancun, which takes about 90 minutes.

    • Note: Taxis from the new Tulum airport can be significantly more expensive than Cancun shuttles, often starting around $80–$100.

2. Price Range & Exclusivity

Feature

Cancun

Tulum

Budget Stay

$30 – $100 (Downtown/Hostels)

$40 – $120 (Tulum Town/Pueblo)

Mid-Range

$150 – $300 (Standard All-Inclusives)

$250 – $450 (Boutique Eco-hotels)

Luxury

$400 – $1,000+ (Posh Resorts)

$600 – $1,500+ (Exclusive Eco-Resorts)

Vibe

Commercial, Busy, High-Rise

Bohemian, Exclusive, Jungle-Chic

Exclusivity: Tulum wins on "perceived" exclusivity. It focuses on small boutique hotels and "eco-luxury" where you pay a premium for seclusion and design. Cancun is more "mass luxury"—larger crowds, but more reliable amenities like A/C and high-speed Wi-Fi.

3. Food & Culture

  • Cancun: Think International Variety. You’ll find everything from Michelin-star dining and high-end steakhouses to massive buffets. For authentic culture, you’ll need to head to Downtown Cancun (El Centro) for incredible street tacos and cochinita pibil.

  • Tulum: Think Artisanal & Wellness. The food scene here is "Jungle Kitchen" style—lots of open-fire cooking, fresh seafood, and vegan-friendly options. It feels more "authentic" in its aesthetic, though prices are often higher than in New York or LA.

4. The Beaches

  • Cancun: Famous for wide, white-sand beaches and bright turquoise water. Because the hotels are high-rises, the beaches are manicured and often cleared of seaweed (sargassum) daily.

  • Tulum: The beaches are narrower and more rugged, lined with palm trees instead of concrete towers. While stunning, Tulum is more prone to sargassum (seaweed) build-up during certain months, which can impact the "pristine" look.

5. Activities: What to Do?

  • Cancun (The Adventure Hub): Best for jet-skiing, parasailing, massive nightclubs (like Coco Bongo), and luxury shopping malls.

  • Tulum (The Zen Hub): Best for Cenotes (natural sinkholes), visiting the cliffside Mayan Ruins, beachfront yoga, and "sound healing" sessions. It is the capital of relaxation and spirituality.

Summary: Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Cancun if: You want a stress-free all-inclusive experience, you love nightlife and shopping, or you are traveling with a large family who needs constant entertainment.

  • Choose Tulum if: You want to "unplug" in a jungle setting, you prefer boutique design over big resorts, and you don’t mind a slightly higher price tag for a "vibe" that feels more connected to nature.

Pro-Tip: If you can’t decide, stay in Playa Mujeres (just north of Cancun). It offers the luxury and ease of Cancun but with the quiet, gated exclusivity that feels a bit more like Tulum!

Are you looking for a trip that's more focused on high-energy fun or quiet relaxation?

Do your homework and discover which area is best for you. Both can be lots of fun if you know what you're looking for when you go. You can always fly into Cancun, spend a couple of nights there, then head over to Tulum and spend a couple of nights there for the ultimate luxury vacation. You'll get the best of both worlds without having to eliminate either one!
