Finding a place to stay is no longer just about picking the cheapest hotel on a list. With the rise of AirBNB, "micro-hotels," Vrbo, and AI-driven pricing, the strategy for saving money has shifted. It’s about choosing the right type of stay for the right destination.

Here is how I unlock the best rates at the most unique locations on my trips.

1. The 30-Minute Booking Strategy

Hotel prices fluctuate much less than flight prices. You don't need to spend days tracking a room or booking months in advance.

  • The "Google First" Rule: Start by typing your destination into Google Hotels. It shows prices from all major Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like Booking.com, Expedia, and Agoda.

  • The Follow-up Call: (My specialty) Once you find the lowest price, call the hotel directly. Ask if they can match the price you saw online or throw in a perk (like free breakfast or a room upgrade). Since they won't have to pay a commission to the booking site, they are usually happy to make a deal.

2. Think Beyond the Standard Hotel

If a traditional hotel room is out of your budget, there are plenty of high-quality alternatives that didn't exist a few years ago:

  • Micro-Hotels: Brands like Motto by Hilton, Moxy by Marriott, and Yotel offer tiny, hyper-functional rooms at a fraction of the price. You get a premium location and a chic lobby scene without paying for square footage you won't use.

  • Luxury Hostels: Forget the "party dorms" of the past and the over-exaggerated movies that portray hostels as dangerous options. Sites like Hostelworld are how I traveled for over a month all throughout Europe. The site now feature "poshtels" with private ensuite rooms that look like boutique hotels but cost 40% less. Trust me, don't knock it 'til you try it!

  • Home Swaps & Pet Sitting: If you’re traveling for more than a week, platforms like HomeExchange or TrustedHousesitters allow you to stay for "free" in exchange for the use of your home or watching a pet.

3. Play the "Opaque" Game

If you aren't picky about the exact brand, you can save 30% to 60% using "blind" booking tools:

  • Priceline Express Deals: You’ll see the star rating, the neighborhood, and the price, but not the name of the hotel until after you pay.

  • Hotwire Hot Rates: Similar to Priceline, this is the best way to snag a 4-star hotel at a 2-star price.

  • Travel Pro Tip: Look at the "recent photos" and "amenities" list on these deals. Many times you can cross-reference them with Google Maps to guess the exact hotel before you hit buy.

4. Watch for the "Headline Price" Trap

A $150 room isn't always $150. Hidden "resort fees" and "urban destination fees" have become standard in most destinations.

  • Check the Total: Always click through to the final checkout page to see the price including taxes and fees.

  • Location vs. Transport: A hotel $30 cheaper but 5 miles outside the city center might end up costing you $40 more in daily Ubers. Use the map view to ensure you're within walking distance of at least one major transit line if you don't plan on renting a car while on your trip.

5. Join the "Genius" or "VIP" Circles

Almost every major booking site now has a free loyalty program.

  • Booking.com Genius: Even at Level 1, you get 10% off thousands of properties.

  • Expedia also gives reward points that translate into key cash rewards. These rewards can be used for all your bookings, including rental cars, cruises, and much more!

  • AARP / AAA: These are the OG discounts that still work. Fun Fact: Anyone can join the AARP (you don't have to be a senior!), and the membership fee usually pays for itself after a single hotel booking.

Final Travel Trend: "Refundable" is the new "Cheap." While non-refundable rates are 10% lower, the flexibility to cancel and re-book if the price drops—or if your plans change—is often worth the few extra dollars.

Now with all the cash you'll be saving on your next trip, you'll actually have some money to splurge a little bit. Treat yourself to something nice on your next vacation!
